Are Makeup Wipes Considered A Liquid On A Plane

Table of Contents

With regulations and restrictions on air travel changing constantly, it is difficult to know what exactly you are allowed to bring on a plane without issue. Often it means researching to pack basic toiletries. To make it easier, I have studied for you on the topic of makeup wipes and compiling a list of the best ones to use and alternatives if you are worried about them being taken away.

Makeup wipes do not count as a liquid when in your carry-on because they are just wipes that are soaked in liquid, rather than liquid-filled containers. They are not bound by the same quantity restrictions as regular makeup removers may be. This means they are often the most convenient choice for travel, as they weigh very little, occupy next to no room, and are anything but complicated to use wherever you are. You can have makeup wipes in either your carry-on or checked bag without any problems.

Recommended Makeup Wipes for Travel

It is always good for air travel to go for makeup wipes that aren’t too drying, as the air in a plane often is.

Neutrogena’s Hydrating Remover Cleansing Towelettes are gentle enough not to irritate the skin but can still eliminate the dirt and cosmetics from the day. The moisturizing effects come from ingredients like Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract and Cucumber Extract, which will prevent that too-clean feeling that other wipes can leave. These wipes are a great budget option for any traveler!

A favorite for sensitive skin is Simple’s Kind to Skin Cleansing Wipes, which can tackle even waterproof mascara while being kind on the skin. Simple Skincare specializes in products that suit sensitive skin, free from harsh chemicals, perfume, artificial dyes, or alcohols that might dry or damage the skin. Instead, ingredients include Vitamin B5 and E, as well as purified water, to benefit your skin while also cleansing it. Hence, they are, likewise, an incredible alternative for traveling. Like Neutrogena, you get 25 wipes per package.

At a marginally higher yet reasonable cost is French brand Klorane with their Makeup Remover Biodegradable Wipes, made without parabens or harsh chemicals. With their branding as a “Farm-to-Face” company, Klorane’s wipes have a lower ecological footprint than other brands might. The main ingredient, cornflower water, claims to be soothing and cleansing at the same time while still being effective at removing stubborn makeup. Klorane also has cornflower eye-patches that are perfect for reviving your tired skin after a long flight.

While it is not ideal to use makeup wipes every day, there might not be other options when traveling. But don’t let your skin suffer for it! Pacifica’s Glowing Makeup Removing Wipes contains glycolic acid, an AHA that clarifies the skin, as well as aloe leaf extract and coconut water, two hydrating ingredients that will help calm and hydrate your skin. These wipes are an excellent option for troubled skin, especially when traveling when you might not have the same accessibility to clarifying Skincare. It is an affordable alternative to a full skincare regimen, as it still works to cleanse your skin. With this option, too, you get 30 wipes.

If you are traveling for a long time or are worried about running out, an old reliable favorite is the Bulk Wipes from MAC Cosmetics. While a bit more of a splurge per package, you get 100 pre-moistened wipes that remove makeup while still being gentle on the skin because of the Vitamin E. If you want to try them out before committing to the large size, MAC also sells a mini version containing 30 wipes.

One of these options will be sure to suit your needs when traveling. From Klorane’s biodegradable, eco-conscious wipes and Pacifica’s vegan and cruelty-free wipes to MAC Cosmetics’ Bulk Wipes and Neutrogena’s hydrating ones, you’re sure to find something that you like!

Makeup Wipe Alternatives

Makeup wipes don’t always suit everyone’s needs, however if you are averse to using disposable products when traveling, there are still other, more earth-friendly alternatives to consider! Firstly, travel is a great time to try out sample sizes of new products, as the size is convenient for your carry-on. On most major airlines, the guidelines state that you are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, each of which needs to contain 3.4 ounces or less.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water is the perfect simple cleanser to bring on your travels. While there is a full-size version, Garnier also sells a smaller, 3.4 oz bottle, which removes even waterproof makeup. Micellar water gets all your makeup off without issue while being gentle enough to use on the eyes. The downside with liquid makeup removers is that it does require cotton pads to use, but it does not need a sink, water, or anything further. Just put some on a pad and wipe, and you’re done!

Cleansing Bars for Travel

If your skin is on the more reactive side, it might not be enough to give your skin a quick wipe-down. A great travel option for you then is to use a cleansing bar! These don’t count as a liquid according to TSA guidelines, so they are not bound to quantity rules, either.

Cleansing bars are gaining popularity because they are low waste, with no plastic to throw out, thus being way more eco-friendly. Clay soap, in particular, is an effective cleanser because it purifies without the use of any chemicals that strip or damage the skin. Most cleansing bars avoid many other cleaners’ waste, often sidestepping many harsh chemicals, artificial dyes, and preservatives that liquid cleansers tend to contain.

Some great examples of cleansing bars include SheaMoisture’s African Black Soap, which can be found at most retailers, a deep cleanser suitable for oilier skin that is less sensitive. It is a cult favorite. It works on most skin types, formulated with hydrating Shea Butter to counteract the strong exfoliating effects of tamarind extract.

Cetaphil’s Gentle Cleansing Bar is an affordable option for sensitive and dry skin. It is a non-comedogenic formula and is suitable for both the face and body, meaning it makes an ideal option for travel. The fewer things you need to bring with you, the better! It is gentle enough for susceptible skin, and reviewers have even praised its ability to not worsen rosacea and other skin conditions.

Another great option is SoapWalla’s Lavender & French Clay Cleansing Bar, made with French clay and lavender, two ingredients great at exfoliating the skin while calming sensitivities. Like other cleansing bars, it also contains a form of aloe vera to help counteract any reactivity. While the cost is somewhat higher than the former options, it is a unisex bar that also functions as a pinch’s shaving cream.

If you have susceptible skin, Ethique has a Bliss Bar that is specifically formulated for sensitive and dry skin, so it focuses on hydrating and soothing the skin using coconut butter. It is vegan, cruelty-free, and sustainably formulated while also being creamy, gentle, and removing makeup effectively. The bar is a more expensive option, but it lasts a long time.

Between all these cleansing bars, you are sure to find something that suits the needs of your skin.

Other Options

On the off chance that you have a skin routine that you feel you cannot live without, an easy solution is to buy small empty squeeze bottles and fill them up with your regular Skincare before traveling! They can always be refilled before your next trip, and it means you leave less waste than with makeup wipes or cotton pads. Most makeup retailers also sell small, travel-sized versions of favorite products under TSA’s 3.4oz liquid limit.
