We all have those moments where we think we have makeup remover at home but right when we get home, we do not, and that can be annoying. We can use all the homemade masks or expensive skincare products in the world, but the first step to healthy skin with the application of makeup is to remove it.
Below are six ways to remove makeup if you don’t have makeup wipes.
Petroleum Jelly
What is it made of?
My all-time favorite, believe it or not, is petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a mixture of waxes and mineral oils, which is then formed into a semisolid jelly-like substance.
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Take a teaspoon amount on your fingers. Step 2: Rub it on to your face in a circular motion. Step 3: Wash your face under tap water.
If it feels too moist, use the steps below:
Step 1: Take a cotton pad. Step 2: Dab the petroleum jelly on it. Step 3: Apply it to your face using the cotton pad. Step 4: Wash your face under tap water. Step 5: If you use a cotton ball repeat the steps 2 – 3 times, taking off my makeup layer by layer.
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
What I love about petroleum jelly is that it is really good for your skin as it keeps your skin moisturized.
It’s super cheap, so one jar lasts forever.
For myself, I have dry skin and petroleum jelly is oil-based,which helps my skin feel hydrated and soft.
Pro-Tip: Make sure when you substitute petroleum jelly as a makeup wipe do not keep it on too long or else it will start to feel very sticky.
Baby Oil
What is it made of?
Baby oil is made mostly of mineral oil. Mineral oil helps in healing and moisturizing your face. The mineral oil is from the earth and all-natural
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Squirt some baby oil onto a cotton pad Step 2: Rub it gently on your eyelids, lashes, and eyebrows Step 3: Squirt some baby oil onto another cotton pad Step 4: Rub it gently on the rest of your face in a circular motion Step 5: Apply a cleanser onto your face Step 6: Wash your face under lukewarm water
Pro-Tip: Baby oil is an OIL, so rubbing gently will work. Do NOT rub it hard.
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
Through research and speaking to my dermatologist especially, she mentioned that many dermatologists are recommending to patients to use baby oil if they have dry skin or mild irritations.
Baby oil doesn’t clog pores.
What I love about this is that my biggest problem is removing mascara. I have to really rub my makeup remover on my eyes to remove the mascara and that really hurt. However, I noticed that baby oil mascara is super easy to remove as it slides right off.
Baby Shampoo
What is it made of?
One of the ingredients in baby shampoo is a surfactant. Surfactant is used in the cosmetic industry to remove dirt and grime. Therefore baby shampoo wipes away eye makeup, even waterproof mascara easily. Not a lot of people know this, but baby shampoo is formulated with softer surfactants than adult shampoo. This means that they are less irritating to the eyes. Therefore it makes a good makeup remover. The Lauryl Glucoside in baby shampoo is one example of it.
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Squirt some baby shampoo onto your fingers (I would recommend a fingertip amount). Step 2: Add some water. Step 3: Rub the shampoo to get it foamy. Step 4: Apply it onto your eyes and face in a circular motion. Step 5: Using a cotton pad, wipe it off. Step 6: Wash your face
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
What I love about this is you can buy one bottle, and this will last a lifetime, it’s super cheap.
There are lots of baby shampoos available in the market. Pick the brand you like because they all work. I go for Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.
It’s readily available.
When I was applying baby shampoo as a substitute to make up wipes what I noticed is the after smell. I love it- it has this nice baby smell that feels cozy and clean after washing my face, especially when I am getting ready for bed.
If you personally do not like a fragrance smell, there are some baby shampoos that do not have a fragrant smell which works the same
Coconut Oil
What is it made of?
Coconut oil is an anti-fragrant plant oil made of fatty acids such as linoleic acid and lauric acid. This helps keep your skin moisturized and reduces inflammation.
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Take the coconut oil from the jar and rub it between your hands. Step 2: Rub it gently onto your face in a circular motion. You will notice that the coconut oil will blend into your makeup and kind of mix and you will see it coming off. Step 3: Wash your face
If you feel the coconut oil is too greasy then follow these steps below:
Step 1: Take the coconut oil from the jar and rub it between your hands. Step 2: Rub it gently onto your face in a circular motion. You will notice that the coconut oil will blend into your makeup and kind of mix and you will see it coming off. Step 3: Use a cotton pad to remove the coconut oil. Step 4: Wash your face.
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
Coconut oil is very popular as a moisturizer.
I remember asking my dermatologist if coconut oil can be an option and it is. She mentioned it is effective to reduce inflammation.
My reason why I love it so much is because it works wonders on softening my skin.
Aloe Vera
What is it made of?
Aloe Vera is a leaf that has three main levels. The inner gel contains 99% water and the rest is made of amino acids, glucomannans, lipids, sterols, and vitamins. The middle layer is made of latex which is a yellow sap holding anthraquinones and glycosides. What this means is that it can help control and reduce acne-causing bacteria on our faces. Finally, the outer layer contains 15 – 16 cells used as a protective covering for the other layers.
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Cut the side (spine) of the Aloe Vera. Step 2: Cut the top and the bottom outer leaf layer. Step 3: Scoop the Aloe Vera out and put it in a jar. Step 4: Take some Aloe Vera and apply it to your face. As always, use a circular motion. You should see your makeup come off. Step 5: Wash your face with lukewarm water.
Pro-Tip: Make sure the Aloe Vera is in a jar with a tight lid. Store it in the fridge so you can use it later.
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
Aloe vera helps keep our super skin hydrated, which is awesome.
What I love about it is that it is all-natural.
Really helps to nourish your skin and keeps it smooth.
It is not only eco-friendly but beneficial to your face as mentioned earlier.
Honey & Baking Soda
What is it made of?
The breakdown is that baking soda helps unclog pores and removes makeup while honey is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, which reduces redness and removes any makeup leftover.
How to use it as a substitute for Makeup remover:
Step 1: Mix 1 spoonful of baking soda and two spoonful’s of honey together until it is nicely blended. Step 2: With your clean hands, take your two fingers and began to apply all over your face gently rubbing until your makeup is completely removed. Step 3: Wash your face with lukewarm water.
Pro-Tip: If you have the time every night try to leave the mixer of baking soda and honey on your face for about 15 minutes and then wash it. You will start seeing a difference in how smooth your face gets.
Benefits aside from being an alternative to Makeup remover:
Baking soda helps balance the pH levels of the skin to help it glow and give radiance.
It helps also exfoliate the dead skins and reveals new freshness.
The honey helps your skin by keeping it from drying out and helps protect, repair, and prevent skin damage.
What I noticed is the honey really helps calm the skin after and smells amazing.
Mixtures of baking soda and honey not only helps remove makeup but helps treat acne.
Note: If you are not a big fan of honey you can also substitute it with lemon. Both works! But my favorite is honey.
Conclusion:
Removing makeup and keeping your face clean and protected is highly important. The products you use on your face really show. They may not show right away but trust me ten years from now it will. Overall, these are my top six recommendations you can use around the house if you have any of these products as a substitute for makeup remover. Makeup wipes are easy to use because it is less messy and quick. However, it does stretch your skin when you are trying to remove your makeup. Your skin stretching is not good because it can cause wrinkles.
